The generation and transmission of solitons produced by direct modulat
ion of laser diodes are numerically analyzed. We found that when biasi
ng the laser slightly below threshold solitons are generated under bot
h periodic and pseudorandom word modulation. However, when the bias cu
rrent is above threshold it is not possible to generate solitons under
pseudorandom word modulation due to pattern effects produced by the r
andom sequences of input bits. A significant reduction of the timing j
itter due to the pulse-to-pulse frequency jitter is obtained when the
laser is biased slightly below threshold for any modulation frequency
and modulation regime.
