Abstract
The question of whether the Friedel-Anderson model gives a good accoun t of the d bands of transition metals when they are dilute in magnesiu m and aluminium alloys has been investigated theoretically. The electr onic structure of several alloys has been calculated by the linear muf fin tin orbital method (LMTO) within the atomic spheres approximation. The calculations give a good account of the experimental data and pro vide a tool for investigating the factors that influence the d-band wi dth. It is concluded that the Friedel-Anderson model describes the ban ds only qualitatively.
