Partial splenectomy was introduced to achieve the benefits of splenect
omy and to avoid the risk of overwhelming infection in patients with s
ymptomatic Gaucher disease. We observed regrowth of the splenic remnan
t, reemergence of preoperative symptoms, and new bone involvement amon
g most of our patients who had undergone partial splenectomy. Enzyme r
eplacement therapy has markedly limited indications for splenectomy, p
artial or total, for Gaucher disease.
