Infant and child mortality levels and trends in Bangladesh are examine
d using data from the 1989 Bangladesh Fertility Survey. Both infant an
d child mortality declined from the mid 1970s but infant mortality dec
lined more quickly. The level of infant mortality in 1989 was around 1
00 per 1000 live births while child mortality (5q(0)) was 200 per 1000
live births. Life table analysis confirms the change in infant and ch
ild mortality. The decline in infant mortality is attributed to the in
troduction of improved public health measures and access to maternal a
nd child health services.
