A Cherenkov FEL can be a suitable source for radiation from the millim
eter wavelength region down to the far infrared. With only a few diffe
rent dielectric materials the laser can range from 6 mm down to approx
imate to 600 mu m. Nonlinear theory shows, for an amplifier configurat
ion, power levels of about 100 kW in the far infrared up to several MW
at millimeter wavelengths. Good coupling with the evanescent wave sup
ported by the dielectrically lined waveguide requires a thin walled an
nular beam of good quality. The characteristics of such an electron gu
n, a special design for a Cherenkov FEL with parameters given in this
paper, will be presented.
