The effect of oxygen adsorption on the (e,2e) spectra of annealed carb
on films has been investigated. There are two regions of extra intensi
ty in the measured spectral momentum density. One at 31 eV below the v
acuum level and a broad one near 11 eV. No dispersion is found for eit
her of these contributions. The dependence of intensity on electron mo
mentum is consistent with almost exclusively s character for the deepe
st level and a mixture of s and p character for the level closest to t
he Fermi level. These results are compared with the electronic structu
re of CO, O and graphite. The possibilities of the (e,2e) technique fo
r the study of adsorbates are discussed.
