G. Grimbizis et al., 2 CASES OF OVARIAN-TUMORS IN WOMEN WHO HAD UNDERGONE MULTIPLE OVARIANSTIMULATION ATTEMPTS, Human reproduction, 10(3), 1995, pp. 520-523
Concerns have been raised recently about the possible association betw
een superovulation and ovarian cancer, In order to contribute to the l
imited literature on this important issue, two cases of ovarian tumour
s in women who had undergone multiple ovulation inductions are present
ed, In the first case, the patient had secondary anovulatory infertili
ty, She was treated with human menopausal gonadotrophin (HMG) alone an
d in combination with clomiphene citrate or buserelin for six cycles,
She then underwent ovarian stimulation with buserelin/HMG in the long
protocol for in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer, In prep
aration for a new IVF/embryo transfer attempt, 8 months later, the scr
eening ultrasound revealed a cystic formation of the left ovary and an
enlargement of the right, During laparotomy, both ovaries were found
to bear large tumours (approximately 6X5X4 cm) which were removed, His
tological examination showed that they were epithelial tumours (serous
-papillary cystadenomas) of borderline malignancy, The patient conceiv
ed spontaneously 1.5 years after the operation, In the second case, th
e patient presented with secondary anovulatory infertility, She underw
ent ovulation induction with clomiphene/HMG and with buserelin/HMG in
the long protocol, and intra-uterine insemination with husband's sperm
atozoa and conceived (singleton pregnancy), She was delivered by Caesa
rean section, during which a cystic tumour of the left ovary was remov
ed, Histological examination revealed a benign mucous cystadenoma of t
he ovary, In conclusion, the clinical information from these two cases
does not support a causal association between ovarian stimulation and
ovarian tumours but does potentially support a facilitating one.
