Indium tin oxide electrodes have been used to investigate in vitro eff
ects of steady electric fields on rat bone marrow stromal cells. At vo
ltages <0.8V, no medium decomposition takes place and an electrical do
uble layer is formed at the electrodes. At the anode, the attachment o
f cells is enhanced but their proliferation is suppressed. Cell prolif
eration is resumed on removal of the field.
