Abstract
This paper has three aims. First, it is intended to characterize a maj or shift in attitudes towards uncertainty, primarily in science and en gineering, that has been taking place in this century. Its second aim is to overview and codify knowledge that has emerged from research on uncertainty and uncertainty-based information over this period. The th ird aim is to show the significance of this knowledge in the emergence and evolution of cybernetics.
