Abstract
The residual stresses, introduced into high-tensile steel chains durin g their manufacture as the result of the application of a manufacturin g test load, have been determined by the neutron diffraction technique . The results are consistent with finite element calculations and with the effects of the manufacturing test load on the fatigue properties of the chains.
