Abstract
Self-reported body weight and height were obtained from 652 20-74 year -old Hispanic adults residing in Long Island (New York) and Connecticu t who were sampled from telephone numbers listed under Spanish surname s and interviewed by telephone in 1992. Some 28% of men and 31% of wom en were overweight, on the basis of weight/height ratio relative to na tional criteria, and 35% of men and 39% of women with less than 12 yea rs of education were overweight. Educational level was negatively asso ciated with weight/height ratio in multiple regression analyses. The s urvey findings should be useful in planning future studies, including interventions aimed at weight reduction in these Hispanic populations.
