A study has been made of chemical and kinetic aspects of cellulose ure
thanation with urea. The reaction in xylene affords low-substituted al
kali-soluble cellulose carbamates, whereas in air, chemically cross-li
nked cellulose derivatives are formed. The reaction mechanisms are dis
cussed.
