A method has been developed for preparing 4,4'-dipyridyl, which is bas
ed on electrochemical reduction of pyridine to 1,1',4,4'-tetrahydro-4,
4'-dipyridyl, followed by its oxidation with sulfur dioxide in organic
phase obtained upon electrolysis. The best yield (60-63%) can be achi
eved if oxidation if performed at -25 to -30 degrees C. The 2,4'- and
2,2'-dipyridyls are formed as by-products.
