The influence of physisorbed water on the sulfidation of an ion exchan
ged CoNaY catalyst is studied by Mossbauer Emission Spectroscopy, Exte
nded X-ray Absorption Fine Structure and Hydrodesulfurization activity
measurements. Physisorbed water present during sulfidation affects th
e Co-sulfide dispersion and the initial HDS activity. Its removal prio
r to sulfidation clearly results in an improvement of these two cataly
st parameters.
