We consider the nonlinear optical (NLO) response of a one-dimensional
conductor to a nonperturbative nonstationary electric field within the
one-electron one-band tight-binding approximation in the absence of r
elaxation. A new effect of absence of induced polarization in an arbit
rary electric field for an electron, localized initially on one site i
s found. A classification of harmonic generation spectra is provided.
A plateau in the harmonic spectrum is found and ways of controlling th
e output spectrum with the external field are discussed. All the resul
ts within the model are exact.
