N. Benjaballah et al., SEVERE BRONCHIOLITIS FOLLOWING PETROLEUM DISTILLATE HYDROCARBON INGESTION - A REPORT OF 2 CASES, Annales de pediatrie, 43(10), 1996, pp. 743-746
Two infants, aged 11 and 13 months, accidentally ingested petroleum di
stillate hydrocarbons. Both developed severe pulmonary manifestations
with diffuse interstitial emphysema, pneumomediastinum, and subcutaneo
us emphysema. Pneumopericardium occurred in one patient. Mechanical ve
ntilation and muscle relaxants were used in both cases. One of the pat
ients died, and postmortem examination of the lungs disclosed severe b
ronchiolar inflammation.
