The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of thought proc
esses represented in the private speech of children on their creative
ability. Both creativity and private speech data were collected from 4
2 preschool and kindergarten children. Analysis using multiple regress
ion indicated that the combination of coping/reinforcing and solving p
rivate speech were significant predictors of higher creativity measure
s, whereas non-facilitative, task-related speech indicated lower creat
ivity measures. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc.
