Blends of XNBR and Vamac prepared by three different techniques have b
een studied in different proportions. Blend properties largely depend
on the blend ratio and also on the blending technique. A preblending t
echnique offers better properties. In the case of the curative masterb
atch technique, poor physical properties were obtained because of a cu
re rate mismatch. A slightly precured XNBR masterbatch when blended wi
th a Vamac masterbatch gives rise to improved properties. IR spectra r
eveal that interchain crosslinking occurs between Vamac and XNBR, alth
ough preheating does not have any remarkable effect on the blend prope
rties, merely delaying the degradation process.
