Abstract
A brief history of the development of the early stapes prosthesis is p resented in this article. The biocompatibility of stapes prostheses cu rrently employed in surgery to correct otosclerosis-induced hearing lo ss and the advantages and disadvantages of the different implant desig ns are also discussed.
