Cochlear implants are an appropriate alternative for selected deaf chi ldren and adults who do not benefit from conventional amplification; i mprovements have been documented in speech perception and speech produ ction skills. Multichannel systems that provide spectral information, in addition to temporal and intensity cues, have demonstrated the perf ormance advantages in children as they have in adults.
