Abstract
A description of the de Haas-van Alphen effect and of superlattice beh avior in a quantizing magnetic field is given in terms of the electron ic topological transition. It is shown that, in the vicinity of the tr ansition, conditions of thermodynamic stability are violated. This lea ds to the ''elimination'' of 1 1/2-order phase transition and induces the first-order phase transition (governed by the magnetic field). The latter manifests itself in the appearance of diamagnetic domains.
