Abstract
Amplified spontaneous emission is experimentally found to play an impo rtant role in the dynamics of pulse formation in and-switched fiber la sers and leads to stepwise (or quantized) behavior of the emission bui ldup. This effect could be included in detailed modeling of pulsed fib er lasers and might be interesting in some applications.
