A variant of the Born approximation is used to calculate doubly differ
ential and total ionization cross sections for the (e, 2e) interaction
between an electron and the alkali atoms, lithium through rubidium. T
he calculation is done for the ionization of the valence electron. A p
rimary purpose of the work is to establish the basic features of the d
oubly differential cross sections. The total cross section results com
pare well with the few experimental data available.
