The properties offered by including a self-pulsating laser in a feedba
ck loop for distance and cable length measurements are investigated. A
simple method for the measurement of distance, displacement and cable
length based on the unique properties of a self-pulsating laser is re
ported. Measuring the main frequency peak of the regenerative oscillat
ions under the condition of high gain, 30 mu m accuracy could be attai
ned for a range of 3 cm.
