The determination of quartz and calcite in environmental aerosol sampl
es was carried out by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform s
pectroscopy (DRIFTS). The results were compared to those of the conven
tional pellet preparation technique and a good agreement was found. Wi
th a reproducible sample preparation, spectra averaging and correction
of the systematic measurement error an appropriate precision of the q
uantitative determination could be achieved. Simple sample preparation
and smaller amount of embedding material are the advantages of DRIFTS
over the pellet technique.
