This report of an intervention in a mental health care institution ill
ustrates that exchanging distorted group images is an effective strate
gy for improving situations of intergroup conflict. The intervention i
s especially effective if the group images are nor attacked which tend
s to reinforce rather than mitigate them, but if they are undermined i
n a nondirective way instead The implementation of this nondirective p
rocess intervention is discussed in depth to demonstrate how the origi
nal intervention technique is enriched in several respects.
