Laser-induced fluorescence was used in an investigation of the populat
ions of the ground and excited (6s5d D-3(1) and D-3(2)) states of Ba a
toms in a plasma formed by laser ablation of Y-Ba-Cu-O target. A noneq
uilibrium distribution of the atoms between the states was detected. A
t large distances from the target about 4% of the atoms were in an exc
ited state.
