A method is proposed for on-line monitoring of laser industrial proces
sing. The method is based on optical heterodyne measurements of the Do
ppler backscattering signal generated in the interaction zone. Qualita
tive and quantitative information on hydrodynamic flows in the interac
tion zone can be obtained. A report is given of measurements, carried
out at cw CO2 laser radiation intensities up to 1 kW/cm(2), on the sur
faces of a number of condensed materials irradiated in the monostatic
interaction configuration.
