Abstract
A fundamentally new mechanism of generation:of higher harmonics in a s trong laser field is proposed. It is based on stimulated self-scatteri ng of a femtosecond pulse during its propagation in a Raman-active med ium. As in the case of rare gases, the output radiation spectrum has a wide plateau and a steep short-wavelength edge.
