Abstract
68 patients underwent oesophageal replacement for benign disease: atre sia (12), reflux oesophagitis (16), caustic stenosis (37), internal fi stula (3). The transplant was the ileocolon (27), the transverse (5) o r left colon (36). It was substernal (55)or posterior mediastinal (13) . A by-pass was performed without oesophagectomy (51) or an interposit ion accompanied oesophagectomy (17). The superior anastomosis was cerv ical (52) or thoracic (16). The inferior anastomosis was on the stomac h (46), duodenum (10) or jejunum (12). Hospital mortality was 8.8%, mo rbidity was 57.3%. Among the 62 survivors, 18 had another operation. A t the end of the survey, 68% had near normal function.
