Kinetics of oxidation of /di-p-chlorophenyl/di-p-nitrophenyl)-4-piperi
dones by peroxomonosulphate in aqueous acetic acid medium have been st
udied. The reactions are first order, both in the piperidone and in th
e oxidant. Electron-withdrawing groups are found to accelerate the rat
e of oxidation and the electron-releasing groups retard it. The Hammet
t rho sigma relationship is used to correlate reactivity with structur
e. The rates of oxidation show an excellent correlation with sigma deg
rees values with a positive reaction constant rho. A linear isokinetic
relationship substantiates the validity of linear free energy relatio
nships. Correlation analysis effectively supports the proposed mechani
sm.
