A model is considered to study the interaction of a synoptic eddy and
the boundary-current recirculation gyre. It is shown that the interact
ion of the anticyclonic recirculation gyre with an anticyclonic synopt
ic eddy can lead to the noticeable strengthening of the gyre intensity
but the interaction of such a gyre with a cyclonic eddy can lead to t
he weakening of the gyre intensity. Thus, the integrated effect of syn
optic eddies entering the Gulf Stream recirculation region, can play a
substantial role in the gyre formation.
