Abstract
The number of methanoxidazing bacteria and rate of oxidation of CH4 wa s studied in water and sediments of the Yenisei estuary, Bay of Yenise i and Kara Sea. The number of methanotrophs reach 7900 cells per mi. T he rate of oxidation of CH4 in the water was 0.0004 - 0.2 mkl/day, in 1 kg of sediments - 0.0004 - 3.3 mkl/day. The maximum intensity of thi s process is found in the river, the minimum - in the sea.
