Relativistic tidal accelerations associated with gravitationally colla
psed configurations are studied. Simple energy arguments are presented
that provide a heuristic interpretation of black-hole tidal fields. T
his interpretation cannot be extended to a complex collapsed configura
tion involving intrinsic quadrupole and higher multipole moments; the
possible astrophysical relevance of such a system is briefly discussed
.
