The infrared and Raman spectra of adipic acid and its potassium salts
in aqueous solution were recorded. An assignment of the fundamental vi
brations is proposed. The analysis of the polarization of the Raman li
nes indicated that the two salts belong to the C-s symmetry group wher
eas the acid has C-1 symmetry. In the crystalline state, the acid salt
appeared to be of type A according to Speakmann's classification. A c
omparison of the conformation was made with that of alkanedioic compou
nds and its salts.
