Nj. Bishop et al., OSTEOPOROSIS IN SEVERE CONGENITAL NEUTROPENIA TREATED WITH GRANULOCYTE-COLONY-STIMULATING FACTOR, British Journal of Haematology, 89(4), 1995, pp. 927-928
Recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) has su
bstantially improved life expectancy for children with severe congenit
al neutropenia (SCN). Severe osteoporosis, reported in this population
, may relate to the disease process, or be a therapeutic side-effect.
This report details bone loss, quantitated absorptiometrically and his
tomorphometrically, in a child with SCN and vertebral collapse, and th
e positive response to anabolic steroid and bisphosphonate therapy.
