Abstract
Certain racial identity attitudes may involve diminished internal emot ional awareness, features of a syndrome known as ''alexithymia,'' whic h has been observed in survivors of extreme trauma. This study found t hat levels of alexithymia, but not eating disorders, were related to a ttitudes characteristic of early stages of racial identity development among African American women.
