Abstract
An emergency early warning system for the fourteen nuclear generating units in the country has been developed at the Nuclear Research Instit ute of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. All units are connected to t he host computer in the emergency center of the State Nuclear Power Au thority in Kiev and interconnected with each other. The early warning system is to make another reactor accident of the magnitude of Chernob yl impossible. Installation of the hardware is to begin at the South U kraine 3 nuclear generating unit in 1997; the costs of the pilot proje ct are estimated at U. S. $ 40 million. After subsequent feasibility s tudies, the software and the hardware may be modified; the early warni ng system could be in operation countrywide by 1999.
