The Program, established in 1991 in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine
and Animal Husbandry, aims to train professionals and scientists to i
mplement sound environmental-management activities in the unique ecosy
stems of the Yucatan region of Mexico. An important goal of the Progra
m is to establish a masters degree in Management and Conservation of T
ropical Natural Resources. The Program seeks to maintain a balance bet
ween resource use and conservation, ensure participation of local peop
le, promote the use of indigenous knowledge, and educate planners, pol
iticians, and other decision-makers about how natural resources can be
maintained. In support of its training and education activities, the
Program will conduct and promote interdisciplinary research in the man
agement and conservation of natural resources, and generate technologi
cal alternatives that permit both production of commodities and improv
ement of the environment.
