N. Rajagopalan et al., AN ELECTROLYTE FOR ENERGY-EFFICIENT MAGNESIUM ELECTROLYTIC CELLS, INDIAN JOURNAL OF CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY, 2(3), 1995, pp. 153-156
The new generation cells for magnesium metal extraction such as bipola
r cells are energy efficient. In such cells, the electrolyte compositi
on plays a major role in obtaining pure metal with less energy consump
tion. To identify such an electrolyte, a series of experiments have be
en carried out with alkali and alkaline earth chlorides. A ternary com
position consisting of magnesium chloride, sodium chloride and potassi
um chloride has been found suitable.
