THE ASSESSMENT OF THE IDENTIFIED SUBSTANCE-ABUSING ADOLESCENT

Assessment of a young person is the logical next step following his or her identification as abusing alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. This article discusses in depth the adolescent interview, including key qu estions and ideas as to how to further assess the adolescent. Reviews of family interaction patterns that contribute to substance abuse and considerations for a family interview are also included. Concluding th is article are discussions of psychological testing and screening inst ruments that can be used to help assess the adolescent.
