According to several data of the literature, cryptosporidia are opport
unistic parasites. Associating with different viruses, they may cause
respiratory, intestinal or/and kidney alterations. Concurrent infectio
n with Cryptosporidium baileyi and chicken anaemia virus (CAV) was obs
erved in a flock of 8000 4-week-old broiler chickens. The birds, showi
ng overt symptoms of stunted growth and 25% mortality from hatching to
4 weeks of age, harboured the protozoan in the epithelial cells of th
e bursa of Fabricius (Fig's I to 4) and the urodeal portion of the clo
aca. This is the first report on an outbreak of avian cryptosporidiosi
s associated with CAV and first avian cryptosporidiosis diagnosed in H
ungary.
