Studied radiolarians characterize the Upper Cretaceous deposits of sou
thwestern Cyprus, namely, the Kannaviou (bentonite clays, up to 100 m
in thickness) and Kathikas (gravity mixtites, 100 - 200 m in thickness
) formations. The radiolarian Amphipyndax pseudoconulus Zone of the Ca
mpanian is distinguished in the lower part of the Kannaviou Formation
sequence. Its upper part and the Kathikas Formation contain a radiolar
ian assemblage of the Amphipyndax tylotus Zone of the upper Campanian-
Maestrichtian. New data facilitate a more refined age determination of
the deposits, which were previously assigned to the Maestrichtian.
