The synthesis of the chiral, donor-acceptor substituted, second-order
NLO chromophore (S)-(+)-N-p-(4-nitrostyryl)phenylprolinol (NSP) (mu
beta(vec)(calc)=1050x10(-30) D cm(5)/esu at 1.17 eV) and its covalent
attachment via ether linkages to the glassy polymer poly(p-hodroxyster
ene) are reported. Thermal cross-linking with 4,4'-diisocyanoto-3,3'-d
imethoxybiphenyl and the tetraphenylglycidyl ether of p-xylene yields
matrices exhibiting T-g values of 245 and 255 degrees C, respectively.
Subsequent to corona poling, the cross-linked materials exhibit chi((
2)) responses of 0.84x10(-7) esu (35pm/V) and 0.85x10(-7) esu (36 pm/V
), respectively, as well as similar-to 90 and similar-to 95% retention
of the responses after 900 and 1600h, respectively, in air at 100 deg
rees C.
