CsFexAg2-x(x=0.72), the first quarternary mixed metal iron telluride,
has been synthesized by flux growth technique. It has a layered ThCr2S
i2 type structure. Fe and Ag form a (mixed) metal square lattice withi
n each (M(2)Te(2))(-) layer (M-Fe, Ag). The structural analysis sugges
ts that the iron atoms have mixed valencies. Weak metal-metal bonding
interactions are present in the metal square lattice. The discovery of
this compound shows that it is possible to prepare other mixed metal
tellurides from alkali-metal polytelluride salts.
