Move than 2000 million people live in areas where malaria transmission
occurs and are therefore at risk of being infected. It follows that 1
000 million people are exposed to the risks of malaria when pregnant.
Although the special features of malaria during pregnancy have been re
cognized for nearly a century(1), it is only recently that it is being
considered as a priority for malaria research and control, as discuss
ed here by Clara Menendez.
