The paper deals with the evaluation of structural changes on the surfa
ce of galvanically metal coated high strength TORAYCA T300 carbon fibr
es after annealing at 1123 K. It was revealed that thin nickel layers
(similar to 0.05 mu m) during the heat treatment were destroyed and sp
herical particles of Ni arose. Due to diffusion of Ni from these parti
cles into the carbon fibre the surface notches were created. This effe
ct was not observed when the carbon fibres with both. thin Ni layer an
d galvanically deposited copper layer were annealed. The layers were d
estroyed and agglomerates of various shapes arose but the surface of t
he fibres remained smooth. The same behaviour was observed at the anne
aling of carbon fibres coated only by a copper layer [1].
