Canine immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (IMT) is often a diagnostic an
d therapeutic challenge. The condition should be suspected in dogs wit
h isolated thrombocytopenia, increased thrombopoiesis, and a lack of e
vidence of hemostatic abnormalities or nonimmunologic platelet sequest
ration consumption, or destruction. A tentative diagnosis can be confi
rmed by measuring antiplatelet (preferably platelet-associated) antibo
dy levels. Concurrent vaccinations, medications, or systemic diseases
may suggest secondary IMT.
