We describe the introduction of a Computer-aided Software Engineering
(CASE) tool at first, second and graduate diploma level in a Systems A
nalysis and Design unit, to support the teaching of the structured ana
lysis methodology. CASE tools are widely used in industry, therefore s
tudent exposure to these tools is needed in university computing curri
cula as long as student learning is not adversely affected by the use
of such tools. This paper presents results of an empirical study to de
termine whether there were any significant differences in the results
obtained for different groups of students that used the tool, but also
to determine any differences between males and females within each gr
oup, given that in all groups there were more males than females enrol
led in the unit. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
