Abstract
We describe a patient with rheumatoid arthritis who developed bacterem ia from Listeria monocytogenes after treatment with low dose oral puls e methotrexate. We discuss possible immunologic mechanisms for suscept ibility to Listeria infections. As the elderly population increases wi th more frequent use of immunosuppressive medications, clinical suspic ion must be maintained to correctly diagnose and treat infections such as Listeria.
